Dove in flight on the lower back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A dove with wings fully spread is shown in flight, viewed from below, with the head turned slightly to one side. The feathers are rendered with soft grey shading and fine dark edges, giving a sense of volume across the wings and body. The image is a close, centred shot of the design on smooth skin, with no colour ink.

The dove picked up the truck just past the second cattle grid, a grey shape riding the heat above the bonnet as if it had been sent ahead to check the road. I had been hauling water out to the salt flats for eleven days and had stopped talking to anything with feathers. It kept pace with me for forty miles anyway, wings wide and steady, never once flapping, banking whenever the road bent.

At the Halfway Café, Dell wiped down the counter and said doves don't fly that far from water unless they're carrying news. I asked what news. He shrugged and poured me tea stewed so dark it could strip paint. "Rain, usually. Or somebody coming home." I laughed at him, then stepped outside and found the bird perched on the petrol pump, head turned sideways, looking at me the way my mother used to look at a bill she had already decided to pay.
I drove on with the dove in the mirror. Past the dry riverbed the sky to the west went the colour of wet slate, and the air tasted of iron and cut grass. The wind came first, lifting dust off the flats in long pale sheets. I pulled onto the shoulder and waited, and then the first drops hit the windscreen, fat and warm, and the road turned to mud in a few breaths.
The dove rose up into the thinning cloud, wings opening until the last of the light came through the feathers, and it did not look back. I sat with the engine ticking and the empty tanks rattling behind me, thinking about the letter in my glovebox that I had been too proud to answer. Then I turned the key and drove east, toward home, with the window down and the rain drumming on the roof like someone knocking to be let in.
