Dove in flight over clouds on an arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic dove with spread wings flies across the centre of the design, its feathers shaded with soft greys and highlights. Behind it, billowing dark clouds fill the background with smooth, blended shading that creates depth and contrast. The photograph is taken at a slight angle, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a blurred indoor background.

The basket is still wet from the morning's rain when you reach the stile at the edge of Hollin Wood, and the dove inside has gone quiet in a way that frightens you more than its squabbling did. Your brother was meant to do this. He was to carry the bird up through the beeches to the clearing by the old oak and let it go when the bells started in Ashdown. Instead he took the cart to Marlow on Tuesday and sent word by the carter that he would be back by Michaelmas, so here you are, working a knot gone hard in the cord loose with your teeth while the cloud rolls over the ridge like a slow tide.

The bird will not leave the basket. You tip it, you coax it with a crust of bread, and finally you lift it out and hold it up against the sky, where the clouds are piled so thick and dark that their edges look scorched. The dove shakes itself, sees the gap above the trees, and goes all at once, its wings dropping open with a clap you feel in your own chest.
It climbs into the black bank. For a moment the white of its breast is the only bright thing left in the valley, and you are sure the cloud will swallow it whole. Then it finds a seam of pale light the storm has left open and tilts towards it, and you stand at the stile with your empty hands until the first drops hit your collar.
You walk home without the basket. At the gate you find you have not once, all the way down the hill, thought about the knot or the cart or the road to Marlow.
