Dove with olive branch on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline of a dove in flight, with its wings spread and an olive branch held in its beak, is tattooed on the inner forearm. The linework is fine and even, and the tattoo appears to use white or very pale ink, so it reads as a light raised outline against the skin. The plain skin background and soft lighting keep the focus on the design.

Dear Tom,

The 4.12 came in this morning with its windows still painted dark at the top, and Mr Ellery swore it was the last of the old carriages. I stood under the canopy beside the milk churns and watched the doors for you, though I knew the train wasn't yours. You said you'd write from Hamburg, and you haven't, so I've stopped expecting envelopes and started expecting sense.
Mr Ellery asked me to chalk the departure board again, since the white paint ran out in March. I did the times, then the little bird you once drew on the back of my ticket, the one with the twig in its beak. He leaned over my shoulder and said it looked like a pigeon that had been to finishing school. I told him it was a dove and that doves carried news. He laughed, the first time since his boy went out east.
Yesterday a woman with a suitcase tied up in string asked whether trains still ran to Carlisle. I said yes, every hour, and she cried into her glove. I didn't know what else to do, so I handed her a biscuit from the tin in the ticket office. She went off down the platform holding a sprig of something green she'd bought from the flower stall, holding it the way you'd hold a letter you were afraid to open.
If you're reading this from some platform far away, come home on the next one. The bird is still on the board. I'll keep the chalk fresh until it rains, and then I'll draw it again.
Love, Nell
