White-ink dove carrying an olive branch on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A dove in flight with a sprig of olive branch in its beak, drawn as a single thin outline with no inner shading. The lines are pale white, so the design reads as white ink or possibly a raised scar rather than dark pigment. The design sits centrally on the forearm against plain, evenly lit skin with a dark background at the edge of the frame.

Brother Anselm had been told the ink would not last the winter, and he had said nothing, because the abbot liked to be proved wrong about small things. The chapter house smelled of lamp oil and wet wool. Outside, the valley below the monastery was white with the first snow, and the river had gone quiet for the first time in a month.

He had been asked to illuminate a single page from the bishop's office, to be sent down to the coast. Nobody told him what it said. He only knew the abbot had read it twice standing up, then sat down, then asked for the old pot of white pigment that had been bought for the chalk-washed borders and never used.
Anselm drew the bird first in lead, then in the palest lime wash he could manage: one unbroken line for the wing, one for the breast, one for the neck bending toward the sprig in its beak. The olive leaves took three strokes each. When the wash dried it almost vanished against the vellum, so he held the page to the window and the bird seemed to lift off the skin of the sheet, pale and unfinished.
The courier came at vespers. He took the letter without looking at the picture, and Anselm was glad, because he had not drawn it for anyone to look at. He had drawn it so that people on the coast would know the monastery had heard them and would answer with the same branch. The abbot told him later that the reply came back in spring, folded around a single olive leaf, pressed flat and still green.
