Dove outline and red heart on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black outline of a dove in flight, with its wings spread and head turned to the right, sits on the inner wrist. A small solid red heart floats to the right of the bird. The linework is thin and even, and the simple composition leaves plenty of bare skin around the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The show had been packed into three wagons since the frost came in, and Ada Pellerin still counted the birds each morning before she counted the takings. He sat on the rim of his basket and looked at the empty ring as if it owed him wages.

Her nephew Tobias, who was nine and believed most things he was told, carried him a dish of millet every dawn and talked to him the way you talk to a dog that has bitten you before. The old hands said a bird that will not fly is carrying something it cannot set down. Tobias thought this was rubbish, then thought about it all day, then asked his aunt what the thing might be. She said she didn't know, and that the bird wasn't telling.

The strongwoman had died in the winter, and her red felt costume was still folded in a trunk nobody had the heart to open. Tobias cut a scrap from the hem, folded it into a small heart, and tied it to the dove's bent leg with a length of thread. In the morning the bird stood on the basket rim a long while. Then he lifted, circled the big top three times, and settled on the centre pole, where the lamps were hung for nobody.

That spring the show went north with the rest of them. The heart stayed on his leg until the thread wore through somewhere past Carlisle, and by then nobody could say whether the bird had been carrying it or the other way about.
