Five white birds in flight on a lower leg
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Five simple white bird silhouettes are arranged in a diagonal line, rising from the lower right towards the upper left of the limb. The birds are solid white shapes with little or no interior detail, and they stand out clearly against the darker skin tone. The plain teal background and soft lighting keep the focus on the small grouping.

You are scraping burnt porridge off the bottom of the big pan at four in the morning when the first fulmar lands on the rail outside the porthole, white as the flour you have been dusting over the board. The trawler is forty miles off Flamborough and the sea is the colour of wet slate. Ambrose, who has fed these men for nineteen years, tells you that birds follow a boat for luck and that you should never, ever throw them anything.

You break the rule anyway. You crack the galley door and toss the heel of yesterday's loaf onto the wet deck, and the birds come in one after another, five of them, tipping sideways in the wind, folding and unfolding like pages in a hymn book. You count them through the steam rising off the urn. Each one touches down for a moment on the gunwale, then peels away towards a shore you cannot see, and the last one hangs above the bait tub longer than the others, as if it has been told to wait.
Ambrose comes up behind you with two mugs of stewed tea and says that the fifth one always lingers. He says it the way he says the weather is turning, without looking up from the mugs.
You dust the steel table with flour, press your palm into it, and lift it away to find five small marks left behind, none of them quite the same. When the swell lifts the galley and the whole boat groans, you do not wipe them off. Two days later, when the trawler noses into the Humber with its nets full and its crew grey-faced, the marks are still there, and you let them be.
