A small dragon in flight is shown as a solid black silhouette with spread wings and a long curved neck and tail. The tattoo sits centrally on the upper chest between the collarbones, with the bare skin of the neck and shoulders around it. The ink is uniform black with no shading or colour, against a plain light background.

The rain had been falling on Saltergate market since before the cheese men shut their stalls, and still the boy would not come in from the awning. He stood with a sack of wet turnips against his hip and watched the sky above the fish sheds, where something dark was turning in the grey.

Nobody else looked up. The stallholders were counting coins into oilcloth purses, and the women with the eel baskets were arguing over the price of sprats. The dragon came lower, its wings held wide and still like a kite, its neck bent like a question. Old Mab Thorne, who sold candles and had outlived two husbands, said it had been coming over the market every wet autumn since her mother's time, and that it never once took anything. It only looked.
The boy owed sixpence to the tallyman and had no way to find it. He walked out into the wet and held up the turnips as if they were an offering. The dragon folded its wings, dropped through the rain in a long slant, and settled on the roof of the fish sheds with a sound like a wet sail. It looked at the turnips. Then it looked at him, and he understood that it was not hungry for vegetables.
He gave it the sixpence, the only thing he owned that shone. The dragon took the coin in its claws and rose, and the rain closed behind it. Next morning a single silver scale lay on the cobbles by the tallyman's door. The tallyman, who was not a superstitious man, paid the debt in full and never again asked where the boy's money came from.
