Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a thin branch with five simple blossoms sits diagonally across the collarbone. The linework is fine and delicate, with light grey shading inside the flower heads. The photograph is a close, soft-focus crop of pale skin against a dark top, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The plum tree behind the kitchen bloomed early this year, before the snow had properly gone, and I cut a single branch for the table in the long room. Mrs Okada says it is bad luck to bring blossom indoors before the spring festival, but she was up to her elbows in bread and only shrugged. Five flowers opened on it within a day, pale and stubborn, as if they had decided the weather was none of their business. The guests stopped arguing over cards to look at them.

I am writing because yesterday a traveller asked me whether the branch would last until the roads opened. I told him it would not, that nothing cut in winter lasts long. He smiled and said then it had done its job, which is a strange thing to say about a flower. I have been thinking about it since. I have not yet decided whether he was right.

When the boy comes back, tell him to bring the good ink from the chest in your study. The branch is almost bare now, but I have kept the last two blossoms in a glass on the sill, and I would like to draw them properly before they go. Come up when the pass is open, if you still want to.
