Dragon tattoo across the top of a foot

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey dragon with a long, curling body and clawed feet is tattooed across the instep of a bare foot. The linework is dark and defined, with grey shading giving the scales and body some depth. The foot sits beside a black pointed mule with a large silver buckle and a red pleated skirt above, against a pale floor.

The rain had been falling on Saltergate market for nine days when the dragon came down off the moor, and the stallholders agreed afterwards that it had not been in any hurry. It curled its long body between the fish trestles and the cheap umbrellas, its clawed feet leaving wet prints on the flagstones, and it asked every seller the same question: where had the grey gone?

Old Mrs Pollard sold buttons and thread from a canvas awning at the end of the row. She told the dragon that grey was what the rain was made of, and that a creature who wanted grey should stand under the eaves and wait for it. So it did. Water ran off its scales in thin silver lines, and it shivered until the shading along its back settled into something like woodsmoke.

The dragon learned then that it had been looking for its colour in the wrong place. Colour was not kept on the moor or in the market. It was kept by whoever stood still long enough to notice the water. Mrs Pollard gave it a spool of black silk and a tin of ash from her stove, and asked only that it hold still while she wound the silk round its forelegs to keep the damp out.

When the rain stopped, the dragon had no more questions. It went back up the hill with the silk still knotted at its ankles, and the stallholders of Saltergate swore for years that the puddles outside the buttons stall kept the shape of its tail.
