The nine boats of Kestle Bay put out before the gulls were properly awake, and every morning the same three small birds flew low ahead of them, skimming the swell as if they had an appointment. Nobody had planted the palm at the end of the mole. Old Hanne said a nut had come ashore in a tar barrel in her grandmother's time, and the harbour children had pressed it into a crack in the stone out of spite, and it had grown anyway, leaning a little further out to sea each year.

That autumn the nets came up empty for six weeks. Ansel Varga, who had the biggest boat and the loudest mouth, said the birds were only scavengers and the palm was only a tree. He tore a loaf in half on the quay and threw the crumbs at the water. Hanne watched from her step and said nothing, for she had known men who laughed at the things that fed them.

The next dawn the three birds were already waiting above the mole, and when Ansel pushed off they did not go out past the reef like the others. They turned north, to a patch of flat grey water over a ledge the charts did not show, and they dropped one by one onto it and stayed there, bobbing, until the nets were so heavy the boat sat low in the water.

Ansel came back with his hold full and sat on the quay a long time. The next morning he cut a notch in the palm's trunk with his knife, and then another for every boat in the fleet, and he left a crust at the foot of the trunk before he rowed out. The birds ate it. They always came first now.
