Small script tattoo on an ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a person's lower leg and foot in black wedge sandals, standing on a wooden floor. A small black script tattoo of a few short words runs vertically on the outer side of the leg, just above the ankle. The fine, dark linework is set against warm skin tones, and the composition is framed from the calf down.

The pair came in on a wet Tuesday, wrapped in newspaper that had been folded twice and then forgotten. Black suede wedges, the platforms scuffed pale at the toes, one cross-strap gone loose where it had caught on a gate. Dad always said you could read a shoe's whole history from its heel, and this one had walked a long way over gravel before it reached my bench.

Tucked inside the left shoe was a folded slip of graph paper, the kind you buy for sums. Five words in biro, pressed so hard they had come through on the other side: keep the ground honest. I didn't know who had written it or why. I only knew the letters leaned forward, as if the hand holding the pen was in a hurry to get somewhere.
I restitched the strap with waxed thread, fitted a new heel tip, and rubbed the suede until it stopped looking tired. The bill came to eleven pounds. When the collector arrived, a woman with a cardigan buttoned one hole out, she didn't ask about the repair. She asked whether I'd found the note.
I said I had. She nodded and held out her hand for the shoes, not the slip. So I kept it, and it's still pinned above the till: a sentence that wanted to be walked on, in a ledger with no name beside it. Some repairs you finish and some you only carry for a while.
