Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A woman wears black pointed heels with clear block heels and cropped blue denim. A small single-stroke black calligraphic script tattoo, with two dots, sits on the inner foot near the arch. The ink is a soft dark grey, set against a neutral grey pavement background.

Mind the drip off the awning, and pull your collar up, because the rain in this market has been falling since before your grandmother was a girl, and it does not care what you came for. Sit, sit. The stall with the blue tarpaulin was the pen-maker's once. Nobody remembers his name now, so I'll give you his story instead, since the weather has nothing better to do.

He could make one stroke of ink do the work of a whole sentence. A widow came to him on a wet Thursday with a single word she wanted written on a slip of card, and she would not say what it meant. He dipped the reed, lifted the brush once, and drew a line that curled like a wave going out over shingle, with two drops above it where the tide had left its salt. She paid him in coppers, folded the card into her glove, and walked out into the rain without looking back.
Years later her son came asking for the word, because he meant to read it over her grave. The pen-maker had to tell him the truth. He had never learned to read it either. He had only drawn what she asked for, one clean pass, and trusted the ink to know the rest.
The son folded a copy into his coat and went off along the wet cobbles. The rain kept on, rinsing the chalk prices off the stalls one by one, and the drops ran down the blue tarpaulin until the whole front of the stall was dark with them.
