A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sunday, 2nd January. Tom has been up the ladder since first light with the tin of black paint from the Ashby sale, drawing the sun on the byre lintel the way Father showed him before his chest gave out. Nine ewes lost since Boxing Day. The vet from Millbrook says it is only the cold, but nobody on this farm believes the vet.

Tom drew the ring first, then a five-pointed star inside it with one unbroken line, the way you'd draw a bird's foot without lifting the pencil. The flames he counted aloud as he went, twenty-two of them, tapering out from the circle like a candle guttering in a draught. When I asked why twenty-two he said Father always used twenty-two and would never say why. Father would never say much of anything by the end.

This morning the frost lay thick on the yard and there were fox prints all round the outside of the wall. They went round and round in a neat ring and never came nearer the byre than the gate. Bess wouldn't cross the yard at all, just stood on the step with her ears flat. All nine remaining ewes are standing in the top field, and the lamb that was going to die is sucking.

Tom says we should do the back door too, to be safe. My hand shook at the seventh flame so I've left it crooked, leaning out toward the field like it is trying to see something coming. Tom says that is honest work and that the crooked one will do the most good. I hope he is right, though I wouldn't tell Mother so.
