Sit closer, you, and mind the lamp. No, the other one, the one who's been picking at his bread since I started. Right. Everybody on the Skerry run knows the tale of the Brannock twins, but they never tell it right, so I'll tell it the way my grandmother told it to me on a boat much like this one.

Their mother kept the light on Carn Mhor, and she had two sons who could never agree on the time of day. One wanted the boats out at dawn, the other wanted them out at dusk, so the sea got no peace between them. Whenever they quarrelled, the tide came up the rocks and took a creel or two. One night the sea itself grew tired of it and rose up in the shape of two dragons, wings spread like sails, and they came at each other across the bay to settle matters once and for all.
They met at the mouth of the harbour and could not part. Their necks locked, their tails wound round each other, and the harder they struggled the tighter the knot became. The old men still point to it under the water on a clear day, black as tar against the sand.
So here is the end of it, and mind you listen. The dragons never let go, and they never drowned either. The knot holds the bay in its shape. When the boats go out at dawn and come home at dusk, they pass between the two raised wings, and the sea lets them by.
