Below the crack, in the spring pool where the meltwater collects, lived a frog with spots like the shadows of leaves. He was the only frog in the valley who looked up instead of down. Every morning he hauled himself onto the flat stone under the stalk and sat with his chin lifted, the way a man sits waiting for a letter that is late.
The rose never came down to him, and he never managed the climb. Seven summers he tried, and seven times he slid back into the pool with his legs spread and his dignity bruised. The shepherd's wife at the hut by the road told him he was a fool. He agreed with her. Then one autumn, when the first frost came down white on the cairns, the rose bowed its red head over the stone, and he turned his green face towards it, and that was as close as either of them ever got.
