Dragonfly tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large dragonfly is tattooed across the forearm, with its wings spread horizontally around the arm and its slender body extending downward. The wing veins are drawn in fine black linework, with grey shading filling the mesh-like cells. The palette is entirely black and grey against pale skin, and the design is centred on the arm with a plain grey fabric sleeve and wall behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The first thing the dragonflies did each August was find the lamp room glass. My father called them the station's bad weather, because they came in ahead of a blow and settled on the brass rail in rows, wings held flat as if someone had ironed them.

I was nine the summer I caught one by its tail. Its body was a single black pin, longer than my little finger, and it hung from my fist while its wings kept testing the air. Father took it from me gently, held it up to the window, and showed me the veins. They ran in a fine net, cell after cell of grey that the light passed through without catching. 'They're built like a herring net,' he said. 'Strong where it matters and nothing wasted.'

When the mainland boat stopped calling and the light went automatic, I came back to the island to clear his things. I found him in the lamp room with the top sash open and a dragonfly resting on his knee. He hadn't moved for an hour, the housekeeper said, because it had come in out of the fog and he didn't want to be the one to send it back into weather.

He died in the October. The next spring the rail was bare, and I climbed the ladder with a tin of brass polish and found one wing pressed flat between two panes of the old glass, grey on grey, the sun coming through it exactly as it always had.
