Dear Col, your red trainers are still in the hall cupboard, the ones with the black laces you swore were lucky. I took them out this morning because the towpath below Calder Lock had flooded again and I was tired of ruining my good pair.

The water lay flat and grey, the sky sitting in it like a lid. I ran with my head down, watching the puddles the way you taught me, and every few strides the trainers flashed back up at me from the wet surface, a second pair pounding along underneath the first. For nearly a mile I could not tell which pair was mine, and I kept glancing down to check I still had feet in them.

At the lock a heron stood on the gate without moving. Mr Halloran was leaning on the paddle wheel with his flask, and when he saw the shoes he laughed and said you had run that path every morning for a year before the van came for you. I hadn't known you were leaving until the van came. He said you never once stopped at the lock to look at the water, only at the reflection of your own feet, as if you were checking they were still keeping up.

I've put the trainers back in the cupboard, but I wrote on a strip of masking tape and stuck it inside the left one, so you'll know where to start when you come down at Christmas. It says Wait for me at the lock. I'll bring the good pair.
