The man at booth four had a ticket folded so many times the creases had gone soft as cloth, and he set it on my counter the way other people set down a rosary. I asked him where he was headed. He said he had been heading the same way for thirty-one years and it had never once got shorter.

On the back of the ticket someone had drawn a loop in blue biro, a figure eight that crossed itself in the middle, with a word running through its waist in a hand that leaned hard to the right. Above the word sat two small round ears, drawn so tiny I had to tilt the paper to the light to be sure. "My daughter did that," he said, "on the back of the first ticket I ever bought her. She said you could trace it without lifting the pen. Never stops, she said. It just comes back round."

The queue behind him shuffled. My stamp was already inked and my instructions were plain: one entry, one exit, one stamp. I traced the loop with my fingertip, following the crossing from one lobe to the other, and it did come back round, the way she had promised. The biro had worn smooth where a thumb had gone over it a thousand times.

I stamped it twice, once on each lobe, and slid the ticket back across the counter. He looked at the two purple marks for a long moment, then went back through the gate the way he had come, his thumb already moving along the loop.
