Dream script with Mickey ears on the stomach

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a small black tattoo on a person's lower abdomen, with the word Dream written in a flowing script followed by a solid silhouette of Mickey Mouse's ears. The lines are crisp and uniform, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against plain skin, with a hand at the top edge and a teal garment at the lower edge.

Night shifts at Halden Crossing are quiet enough that you start reading what people leave behind. Mostly it is receipts, a single glove, once a whole bag of satsumas. Beside it, two round loops sat on top of each other like a pair of bread rolls, drawn by somebody who had clearly done it many times.

The boy who came to my window an hour later was about nine, clutching a passport with one corner chewed off. His father stood behind him, hands in his coat pockets, watching the floor. I asked the usual questions, purpose of travel, how long, and the boy answered for both of them. They were going to see his aunt in a town with a harbour and a clock that played a tune at noon. He told me she had promised to take him to the wooden carousel, the one with painted horses whose manes are real horsehair.

I checked the stamp, the date, the photograph against his face. Everything matched, which is rare at four in the morning. Then he slid a small plastic figure across the counter, a grey mouse with round ears, and asked if I wanted it. I said no, but I thanked him, and he looked pleased in the way children do when a grown-up has been polite about something that matters to them.

When they had gone, I took the ticket scrap from my drawer and turned it over again. Dream. Two loops. I stamped nothing and wrote nothing down. I just put it back under the desk, where the next person might find it.
