Small heart outline on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart drawn in a loose outline with a sketchy, doubled line sits on the side of the ribs. The photograph is black and white, showing a raised arm, a white tank top and a bright window in the background. The tattoo is placed low on the frame, with the heart as the clear focal point against plain skin.

He admitted he had. The first line had gone wobbly where the lamp flickered, so he had gone over it, letting the second stroke sit a hair outside the first, the way a swallow's wing dips before it turns.
"Then it's not a mistake," Ada said. "It's a conversation. The first line is what you meant. The second is what you decided to keep." She taught him to bone the folds flat with a bone folder, to cut thread on the bench and never on the table, and to leave a little room at the head of every page for the reader's thumb. Most of all she taught him patience, which she said was just nerve with its coat buttoned.
When the ledger for the Hartley estate came back from the rebind, the heart was still in the corner of the first endpaper, pressed under the glue and nearly invisible. Ada had not been asked to keep it. She had kept it anyway. Wim turned the cover over and found her own pencil mark beside his, a single firm line drawn without hesitation, and beneath it, in her cramped hand: Keep.
