Infinity heart with script name on upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of an infinity loop forming a heart shape, with the word Emily written in cursive script inside the upper loop. The lines are solid black with a uniform weight and some softness at the edges, and the design sits centrally on the upper back against a plain skin background. The photograph is taken from behind, showing only hair and the back of the neck with no face visible.

The boat was two hours past the skerry when Tomas Reid remembered the letter was still lying on the kitchen sill. He had meant to hand it to Emily Carr on the quay, but the tide had turned early and the mate was shouting for the mainsail. Ten weeks to the southern ports, the captain said, and no turning back for paper.

Old Hanne, who kept the lamp at the far rock, had once told him a story when he was small. A sailor's heart runs out across the water in a loop and comes home again, and the two curves never quite meet at the end, because the sea will not allow it to be finished. Tomas had laughed at her then. Now, with nothing to do but wait for the wind, he drew the shape on the back of a tally sheet, two loops tangled into a heart, and wrote her name inside the upper curve in the careful hand his mother had taught him.
The water went flat and grey and then gold. The cook sang the same three songs until even the gulls seemed bored of them. On the homeward run the wind died for four days, and Tomas traced the drawing with his thumb until the paper went soft as cloth.
When they rounded the headland, Emily was standing on the quay with her shawl pulled tight against the spray. She had heard from Hanne that he had sailed without saying goodbye. He unfolded the tally sheet and held it out. She ran her finger along the upper loop, over her own name, and then along the lower one, and said nothing for a long while, until the lines ran back into each other and there was no longer any end to find.
