Dreamcatcher and daisies on a thigh
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a woven web, beaded edge and two daisies sits on the outer thigh, with feathers and a small bead-ringed charm hanging below. The linework is dark and fairly bold, with pink and purple ribbons and yellow daisy centres adding colour to the greys and black. The tattoo fills the right side of the frame, with a pink garment at the hip and a hand resting at the top left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
In the harbour town of Scarrow, where the boats went out before light, there was a net-mender called Mabel Quayle who kept a willow hoop hung by her door. She wove a web inside it, tight as a herring net and fine as spider silk, and strung it with sea glass and blue beads so that it rang when the wind came off the water.

Her son Tom sailed on the Brightwater, and when the boat did not come back from the Dogger bank one winter, Mabel did not weep in the square as the other mothers did. She sat by the fire with the hoop on her knee and mended every knot in it. "A dream caught here will find its way home," she told the gulls, and the gulls laughed at her.
The town said she had gone soft in the head. Still, each night she hung the hoop above her bed and slept, and each morning she found a feather caught in the web: grey at first, then white, then rust-coloured, as if some bird were carrying news up from the sea. The daisies she pressed from the sea wall came up yellow on her windowsill, though it was February.
On the fortieth morning a pink ribbon lay across the web, and beneath it a boy's cap knotted with dulse. Mabel carried the cap down to the quay and hung the hoop from the mast of the Brightwater, which had come in on the tide at dawn with its crew asleep on the deck. Nobody said much after that. The beads on the rim rang twice, softly, and the harbour went quiet again.
