Lotus and dotwork chain on a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink lotus flower sits on the outer thigh, with layered petals, a central bud and a lace-like scalloped band. Fine dotted lines trail down from the flower in arcs and drops, creating a chain-like pattern. The image is a close, angled shot of the thigh against a dark padded surface, with the flower filling most of the frame.

Dear Ines,

The lamps on Calder Street were already out when I finished the ring, so I carried it to the window and turned it under the gaslight from the lane. You will laugh, but the lotus came up exactly as you drew it: six petals folded open, the inner bud pinched tight like a fist that has decided something. Mr Okafor said I had been stubborn about the scallops, but the lace edge is what makes it look dipped in frost rather than cut from metal. Thank you for insisting.
The dots were the hard part. Forty-one of them, each punched with the fine awl, and every one had to fall on a line you could only guess at. I drilled the drops last, the little teardrops hanging off the band, and I counted them under my breath like a rosary until my fingers stopped shaking. When the last one sat true, the whole chain swung loose across the silver the way beads do on a string pulled taut.
Mrs Ellery came for it at closing, pale and quick, and asked whether it would hold a stone. I told her it would hold anything that wanted to be carried. She paid in coppers and a horn button, and I let her have it.
I have kept your drawing. It is pinned above my bench, and tonight the ink looks almost wet in the lamplight. Come and see it before the frost takes the window.
Yours in dust and solder, Tomas
