Dreamcatchers and feathers on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows three dreamcatchers, one large and two smaller, linked by beaded strings with feathers hanging from the left. The feathers are shaded in brown and grey with fine detail along the barbs, while the dreamcatcher webs are drawn in clean dark linework. Small pale blue beads add a touch of colour against the mostly brown and grey palette, and the design wraps across the outer thigh toward the hip.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mother Hale kept three hoops of ash on nails above her door on Gritstone Pass, and every winter she wove new webs in them with nettle thread and a single hair from the old ewe. The webs were so fine that a moth caught in one would fret itself to nothing. When the wind came down off the tops she hung the largest hoop over her own bed and let the smaller ones take the draughts.

Her son Tom carried wool to the mill towns and came back each spring thinner and quieter, and he would not say what kept him awake. One January she took the biggest hoop down, tied three blue glass beads to its base, and hung it above his cot with grey feathers dangling from the ring. She told him the webs caught whatever came in the dark and held it until morning.

He slept that night for the first time in a year. In the morning he said he had dreamed of a road running out of the pass and down into the valley, and that the feathers had turned on their strings to point the way. Mother Hale said nothing. The webs had caught the fear, as they always did, but they had caught the road as well, and she could see now that he had been dreaming of leaving.

He asked her to take it down, and she did. He carried the three hoops up to the thorn at the top of the pass, hung them where the wind could work through them, and walked down towards the mills in the daylight with the feathers swinging at his hip. Mother Hale watched him to the bend. The webs stayed on the thorn all winter, and the wind went through them, finding nothing to hold.
