Dreamcatcher and feathers on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a woven web inside its hoop hangs two long feathers and small beads, shown on a forearm. Small script lettering curves along the upper edge of the hoop, too small to read clearly in this photo. The work uses black ink and grey tones with fine, crisp linework, and the arm is photographed against a grey sofa in soft indoor light.

By three in the morning Ward 9 has run out of quiet, so you walk the corridor counting the bleeps the way other people count sheep. Bay four is still awake. Mrs Okafor's grandson left a dreamcatcher on her locker before he went home, a willow hoop wound with thread, two grey feathers hanging from it and a string of small beads that knock against the bedrail whenever the heating clicks on.

She asks what it's for. You tell her what your nan told you, that the web catches the bad dreams and lets the good ones slip down through the middle to whoever is sleeping underneath. She says her late husband used to believe the same about the wardrobe door. You check her line, check the chart, and in the ten minutes that takes she falls asleep with one hand resting on the hoop.
At six the day staff come in smelling of rain. You are meant to hand over and go, but you stand at the window holding the dreamcatcher, which you took down because it kept swinging in the draught. Dawn comes through the web and throws a small circle of lace across the blanket, every knot of thread lit at once.
You hang it back on the locker so it faces her. On the bus home you think about what the web might have caught overnight: the bleeps, the cold tea, the old man in bay two who kept asking for his brother. Nothing that mattered got through to her, you decide, and that will have to do.
