Dreamcatcher and feathers on a thigh
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A large dreamcatcher with a fine web of concentric lines and two smaller dreamcatchers hangs beside a cluster of feathers, linked by small turquoise beads. The linework is dark and the feathers are shaded in black and grey, with fine detail in the plumes. The tattoo fills most of the frame, with a bracelet and a patterned fabric visible at the edge.

The old net-mender at Harrowgate Cove had a rule that nothing caught in the web should be thrown back without being looked at first. So when the storm-blown boys came up the shingle with a wet cloth bundle, she unrolled it on her table and found a ring of willow no wider than a cartwheel, strung with a web so fine it seemed to hold the lamplight rather than the lamp holding it. Woven into the middle was a single grey feather, and tied to its quill a bead of green glass.

She asked where it came from. The boys said the wreck of the Margaret Anne, three nights past, and a trunk that had no name on it. Inside the trunk were two smaller rings, also webbed, and a pile of gull feathers gone soft from salt. Nobody in the village claimed the trunk, so the net-mender took it into her cottage and set the three rings in her window to dry.
That winter the fishing fleet came home every night without losing a man, and the mending wives said it was the strangest luck they had ever known. The net-mender said nothing, though she kept the glass bead on a thread around her neck. In spring she hung the largest ring above the cove door and gave the smaller two to the boys, telling them to carry them back to wherever the trunk had come from, and to remember that a web is only as good as the knots at its join.
