Dreamcatcher and feathers on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large dreamcatcher with a woven web and three hoops hangs from the top of the frame, with shaded brown and grey feathers and short strands below. The feathers and hoops are rendered in soft grey and black shading with fine detail, and small teal beads add colour along the strands. The tattoo fills the frame on the upper leg against a pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every Thursday the rain came sideways off the moor into the market at Hollin Cross, and the stallholders tied their awnings down with baling twine. Maud Penhallow sold feathers from the far end, under a tarpaulin that never quite kept the wet out. Pigeon, gull, rook, and once a peacock tail she would not name a price for. Her hoops were willow, cut green and bent while wet so they dried tight as drums.

A boy called Tobias Greave came one morning with a dream he could not shake. Every night a grey man stood at the foot of his bed and counted his teeth, slowly, one at a time. His mother had told the vicar, and the vicar had said boys dream. Maud looked at him for a long while over her crate. Then she took a hoop, wound it with waxed thread, and began the web. Knot by knot, she said, so the bad dreams get tangled before they reach the pillow. The good ones are small enough to slip through.

She taught him the knots that afternoon while the rain drummed the canvas. Three hoops, the small ones hung from the big one, each with its own star of thread. From the bottom she tied the feathers, brown and grey, with teal glass beads strung between them so the children on the next stall could see the colour from across the square. A thing that catches, she told him, must hang where it can move. Otherwise it only holds what is already in it.

He hung it above his bed that night. The grey man came, counted to nine, and stopped, because the web had caught his hand and held it. He looked up at the rings for a long time, then went back out into the rain to try the house on the next street. In the morning Maud found one grey feather pinned to her crate, dry as paper, and she knew the weather had turned for good.
