Dreamcatcher and feathers on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink dreamcatcher hangs from a small loop with two feathers beneath it, set against pale skin on the upper arm. The design uses bold outlines and solid black fills, with a fine woven pattern inside the circular frame. The woman is photographed from behind in a forest, with warm, slightly faded tones and a soft, blurred background.

The gulls were already quarrelling over the harbour wall when Maud Penrose carried the willow hoop down to the boats. She had bound it three times that winter, each time with the grey twine her husband used for mending pots, and each time the loops had worked loose by the spring tides. This one she wove tight, lacing the centre into a star so fine a moth would have stuck in it.

Her son Tobias was the one who had gone out in the January blow and not come back with the others. Nobody in Porthglaze said so aloud, but the cottages on Chapel Row kept their shutters closed at night, and mothers counted their children twice before bed. Maud hung the hoop above the door of the Ship's Rest boarding house, where the landlady let her sleep in the back room in return for scrubbing the steps.
The guests came and went that summer, travelling salesmen and a schoolmaster with a cough, and every one of them slept under the hoop without knowing it was there to catch anything. Only the cook noticed that the feathers hanging beneath it were gull feathers, two of them, black at the tips, plucked from the wall where a bird had died.
On the first night of September a boy knocked at the back door, soaked to the skin and asking for a bed. Maud gave him the back room, and at dawn she found him asleep with his hands tucked into his armpits and the feathers turning slowly in the draught from the door. She put the kettle on and let him sleep, and she did not ask his name.
