Small sun and moon tattoo on an elbow
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small black ink tattoo showing a circular sun with a crescent moon at its centre and short rays spreading outwards, with a few tiny dots nearby. The linework is thin and even, with no shading beyond the crosshatched rays. The warm, faded photographic tone and blurred background of a bench and wrought iron table keep the focus on the elbow.

The copper sun over the Vell gate had been drawn wrong for three hundred years, and the Queen of Ambrenne wanted it corrected before the solstice. I was sent up the scaffold with a pot of soot ink and a goose quill, because I was the only apprentice who could keep a line steady in the wind. Below me the whole court pretended not to watch.

Nobody had told me what the old sun held at its centre. The original plate, tucked behind the gatekeeper's ledger, showed a crescent moon nestled in the disc like a sleeping cat in a basket. The rays spread outward in short, careful strokes, and between them someone had scattered seven small dots, one for each astronomer who had measured the sky before the palace was built. I copied every one. My hand did not shake once, which surprised me more than anyone.
On the last morning the Queen climbed the scaffold herself, out of breath and furious. She studied the finished circle for a long time, then asked why the moon had been drawn so small when everyone knew it was the larger body in the Ambrennian sky. I told her the truth: the moon is only ever as big as the sun allows, and an eclipse is just the sun agreeing to step aside for a while.
She laughed, which I had not expected, and ordered the copper left exactly as I had made it. The dots stay too, she said. Below us the gatekeeper rang the noon bell, and the light fell across the courtyard in thin gold rays, the way it always had, as if nothing had ever needed rubbing out.
