Dreamcatcher and purple flowers on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A dreamcatcher sits on the outer thigh, with a woven web, teal beads, purple ribbons, a gold pendant set with a pale gem, and two black feathers hanging below. Three purple flowers with pink centres overlap the top right of the hoop. The web and feathers use fine shading and the flowers have soft blended tones, with colour ink dominating the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every autumn the fair pitched on the common above Ashby Mill, and every autumn Mabel Corran hung her hoop of willow and sinew from the pole of the coconut shy, because the children could not sleep for the clatter of the carousel and she told their mothers it was her job to take the noise out of their heads.

She had learned the knots from her grandmother, who had learned them from a ribbon seller at Stowmarket who swore he had them from a woman of no fixed road. The web was spun from a single length of thread that was never cut, so that a bad dream caught in it could not find the loose end and climb out. Purple ribbon for courage, teal beads for luck, and for each child who came to her with a nightmare she could not cure, one black feather from a crow she had buried herself under the hawthorn.

The gold pendant with the pale stone had been her mother's brooch. She pinned it to the hoop the winter the fair did not come, and the stone held a little light the way a pond does after rain. It was said that a dream caught by that stone came back to the dreamer in daylight as something they could use.

On the last night of the fair a boy came to her tent with his jaw set hard and asked her to catch the one that kept him awake, the one where his father did not come back from the sea. Mabel looked at the web for a long time. Then she told him dreams were not hers to keep, only to hold for a while, and she put the hoop into his hands and told him to hang it over his own bed. He carried it home under his arm. In the morning the fair had gone from the common, and the boy slept through until the milkman came.
