Gold and pink jewellery motifs on a lower leg
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows several ornate jewellery-style motifs: a crowned heart, a heart with wings, a pink star inside a circle, a faceted heart brooch and a crescent moon piece. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with gold shading, rounded highlights and small gem details. Red, pink and gold ink dominate, and the pieces are arranged in a diagonal cluster across the leg.

Snow had shut the high road for nine days when the carrier came down to the Hollin Inn with a brass-cornered trunk he would not open. Maud Tarrant let him leave it under the stairs in exchange for his supper, and then she forgot about it, because there were sheep to get in and a fire to keep and nobody on the road who could pay for a room.

On the tenth night somebody knocked at the back door, softly, the way a child knocks when she has been told not to. It was a girl no older than Maud's own boy, wrapped in a sack and white to the knees. She asked for the trunk by name. When Maud hesitated, the girl opened her hand and showed her a compact of gold, its lid set with a pink glass, and when she thumbed it open a little star turned inside like a wheel in a clock.
"My grandmother's," the girl said. "She told me the pieces would keep the cold off. Each one stands for something she was too proud to say aloud."
Maud fetched the trunk. Inside, wrapped in oiled cloth, lay a crowned heart, a heart with its wings folded back, a faceted brooch as bright as frost on glass, and a crescent moon no thicker than a fingernail. The girl took out the moon, pinned it to her collar, and sat down by the fire without asking whether she might.
In the morning the snow had stopped and the sky was hard and blue. The girl was gone, and so was the compact. Maud found the trunk open with only one piece left, a small pink heart pinned to the lining, and a note in a looping hand: for the one who kept the door.
