Dreamcatcher arrows and Psalm 61:2 design
Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of a hoop with dots along its edge, decorated with two arrows, two hearts and four hanging feathers with patterned detail. The centre holds the lettered verse When my heart is overwhelmed lead me to the rock that is higher than I, with Psalm 61:2 beneath the feathers. The artwork uses bold, hand-drawn outlines and simple fills on a plain white background, with a balanced, symmetrical composition.

The keeper's wife hung the hoop above the lamp room door the winter the boats stopped coming, when the sea took the lower steps and gulls nested on the gallery rail. It was a willow ring strung with sinew and dotted all round with knots, and four feathers hung from its base: grey gull, brown hen, a barred owl's, and a white one nobody on the island could name. Her husband laughed at it. He said a lighthouse had no need of catching anything.

Then the fog came in off the Sound and stayed nine days. On the tenth night a boy from the mainland supply boat was out beyond the Teeth, rowing with one oar because the other had gone over the side, and he could not see the tower at all. The keeper climbed up and turned the lamp by hand, because the clockwork had seized, while his wife held the lantern to the glass until her arms shook.
The boy heard the horn, which was only a bellow the keeper sounded every half minute, and he steered toward it. He came in on the wrong side, at a black shelf the charts called Higher Stone, and he said afterwards that a woman's voice had told him to pull for the rock that stood higher than he did. It was the keeper's wife, singing the verse her mother had taught her. The keeper swore to the end of his days that the feathers rattled on the hoop though the lamp room door was shut.
