Wild hearts can't be tamed lettering

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The design sets the words Wild, hearts, can't be and tamed in flowing hand-lettered script, with the letters linked by swashes and curled flourishes. The linework is bold and even in black ink on a pale background. It is a flat, single-colour drawing with no shading, and the text fills the frame from top to bottom.

The keeper's daughter, Nell Harrow, was nine the winter the sea took the lower steps of the lighthouse at Scarrow Head. Her father said the tide had grown tired of waiting for them to leave. He patched the stones with tar and rope and told her to stop climbing the rail to watch the waves, but she climbed it anyway, because the gulls out there rode the wind like they had been let off a chain.

One night a grey mare came up out of the surf at the foot of the cliff, her mane full of kelp, and stood on the wet rock looking up at the lamp. Nell carried a lantern down the iron stair and the mare did not bolt. She only waited, the way a thing waits that has been waiting a long time. Her father said such horses were not horses at all and that the sea had a habit of sending its messengers in shapes that pleased children. Nell did not care what the mare was. She put her hand on its wet neck and felt the thrum under the skin, quick as a struck bell.

The mare would not be saddled, not by her father's rope nor by the rope from the fishermen's boat in the morning. Every time they came near, she turned her head and gave them the flat, unbothered look of a creature that had never once been caught. Nell understood then that her father was not trying to keep the horse. He was trying to keep the light from being a thing anyone could be made to stop.

The mare went back into the sea at dawn, and Nell kept the lantern lit every night after that, not for ships, but so the mare would know where the rock was.
