Black and grey stippled line drawing of a dreamcatcher design with a butterfly, roses and feathers, shown on a white background with no body placement.

Dreamcatcher with butterfly and roses

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a dreamcatcher with a butterfly at the centre of its hoop, roses and leaves along the upper right and left edges, and a smaller mandala medallion hanging below. Feathers and beaded strands hang from the hoop and medallion. The linework is fine and precise, with dotwork stippling in the hoop and mandala, and the image is entirely black ink on white.

The starter has sulked all night, so I've given up on kneading and am sat on an upturned crate by the ovens with this pad on my knee. Your mother's hoop still hangs above the proving shelf where you left it, the willow ring wrapped in thread, its web strung with feathers gone the colour of weak tea from the steam. Mrs Okafor from number nine says it catches bad dreams. I say it catches flour.

Last Tuesday a man came in before the shutters were up, wanting a loaf for a christening and a word about his daughter's bus fare. I gave him the rose and cardamom bun we made for the Hallam wedding, the one with a petal pressed into the glaze, and he cried into the paper bag as if it was the first thing anyone had handed him in a year. I didn't ask why. I cut him an extra slice of the seed loaf and let him sit by the warm bricks until the light came grey over the car park.

That's the thing about this trade, love. The dreams are small: a bun, a seat by the oven, the dotted pattern of the star I pressed into the morning's rolls with the back of a spoon. The butterfly you inked onto that hoop last spring is still there, and every dawn when I pull the first tray I tell it the day is starting. Come home at Easter. The buns will keep, and so will the hoop, though I'd rather you took it down yourself.
