Up at Corrie Junction there was a signal box with a window facing the long curve, and in it a woman called Nell Harker hung a ring of wire wound with thread the colour of old brass. She'd unpicked the chain from her dead husband's watch to make it, and she strung it with three jackdaw feathers she'd found on the sleepers, their tips dipped in the gilt paint she kept for lettering the station name. Every night she sat with her tea and the lever frame and let the rails hum up through the floorboards.
The web in the hoop was meant to catch the dreams the night trains dropped on their way past. Most of them slid through the holes, she said, like water through a sieve, and carried on to whichever town the drivers were sleeping in. But one night a dream snagged, small and grey, the dream of a porter who had never once been asked where he was going. Nell kept it in the web for a week. Every time a train came through, the feathers swung, and the porter stood a little taller on the platform outside.
She let it go at dawn. The porter, who had never been asked a question by anyone, looked up at her and said, where are you off to, then? She told him she didn't know yet. He said it was the first honest answer anyone had given him in years. Nell's gold never tarnished after that, they say, because it never caught a lie. There's your train. Mind the step, it's slippier than it looks.
