The customs post at Lanterne Gap had been shut since the snow, so when Ysolde Marr came up the track with a mule and a bundle of wire, the two guards only stared. She said she had come to mend the net. They asked what net. She pointed up at the pass, where a grey mesh of thread ran from rock to rock across the road, sagging with the weight of everything that had tried to cross in its sleep.

Her grandmother had strung it, she said, the year the border was drawn through the middle of the valley. Dreams did not carry papers, so they walked over at night, the bad ones especially, looking for a bed in the wrong country. The net caught them and held them until morning, when the sun burned them off like frost. But the net had holes now. Five of its feathers had been torn away in the last storm, and nobody had bothered to replace them.
She worked through the afternoon with a bone needle and a hank of undyed linen. Each knot she tied around the great ring at the centre, where a star of eight points had been woven by hand, something turned in the wind. The guards brought her tea and asked about the star. She said it was not a star at all, but a door that opened in every direction, and that a person who knew how to count its points could find the way home from anywhere.
At dusk she hung the last feather from the lowest cord. It was the colour of old paper and covered in tiny dots, like rain on a window. The guards stepped back. Below them, on the far slope, a single lantern moved along the track toward the gap, then stopped, as if whoever carried it had also been dreaming of a bed they could not reach.
