Black ink dreamcatcher design with feathers

Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn dreamcatcher with a large upper hoop and a smaller lower hoop, each filled with a radiating web of fine lines and small dots. Feathers with detailed hatched barbs hang from the lower hoop and sides, with beads and small shell or leaf shapes along the strings. The drawing is rendered in black linework and shading on a plain white background, with no colour.

Mara had been told the hoop had to be willow, cut green and bent while it still remembered being a tree. So she walked the path below Ashcombe at first light with her knife in her coat pocket and the brook loud beside her. The wood was full of feathers that week. Jay blue, a pheasant's brown pinion, one long grey flight feather stuck in the bramble like a note somebody had meant to post and forgotten.

She bent the big hoop over her knee and bound it with waxed thread, then spent the morning on the web. Her grandmother's rule was that the lines must meet at the centre and never knot there, so whatever came in at night would slide off the edges and fall through to the grass. Mara counted the spokes aloud as she went. Twenty-eight. She pricked dots along each line with the point of the knife, because her grandmother had said the dots were where the dreams were kept, and a dream with nowhere to sit would wander off.

The smaller hoop was for her brother Tomas, who had started waking at three with his hands fisted and the blanket twisted round his shins. She threaded it with black beads and two curled shells from the stream. "Where do the bad ones go?" he asked, turning it in his palm. "Out through the holes," she said. "Nobody can hold on to a thing that small."

That night she lay awake listening to him breathe through the wall. Near dawn the feathers on the lower hoop began to stir against the window frame, slow and deliberate, as though something passing outside had stopped to read them. Tomas slept on until the light came up grey and ordinary over the brook, and when she went in to wake him his fists were open on the blanket.
