Dreamcatcher with feathers design
Mixed · Flash
The drawing shows a dreamcatcher with a beaded outer ring, a radial flower pattern woven across its centre and a fringe of beads and thin strands below. Three feathers hang from the base, drawn with fine grey hatching and outlines. Teal and pink fill the beads, flower petals and feather accents, while the rest is shaded in grey pencil or ink on a plain beige background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Sit closer, the pair of you, and mind the fire, for this is a story my mother told me when the herring were thin and the boats stayed in. There was a net-mender on the far side of Eriskay called Morag Ross, and she could mend anything with a hole in it, sail or stocking or a man's good heart. Every winter she hung a hoop of driftwood by her door, wound round with white thread and strung with sea-glass from the tideline, blue and green, with the odd pink bead a lad from Lewis had given her for nothing.

One February a storm brought three gulls down dead onto the shingle. Morag lifted them before the dogs could reach them, and being a practical woman she kept their grey wings for her hoop. She knotted the feathers into the bead fringe so they hung below the web like wet washing, and the first night she hung it up, the wind came through the window and turned them slow.
Here is the part that matters. The hoop caught no fish, no ghosts and no bad news, yet every morning Morag woke knowing which boats would come home. She said the web only held what was worth holding and let the rest fall through the middle, the way a good net should.
So if you find yourself lying awake over something that isn't yours to mend, remember Morag's hoop, and let the rest go through.
