Dreamcatcher with deer skull on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A dreamcatcher with a deer skull and antlers at its centre sits inside a circle, with a radiating web of lines behind it. Three feathers hang from the lower edge of the hoop, and the skull is shaded in grey while the outlines are fine and precise. The photo is black and white, and the tattoo is placed on the outer thigh, framed by a dark garment and a blurred indoor background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had shut the pass for nine days when the innkeeper's daughter, Ysolde Marr, first noticed that the stranger by the taproom fire cast no shadow. She was seventeen and had been told never to look at guests too long. Her father hung the old net above the door each winter, a hoop of ash wood, sinew and three grey feathers, with a stag's skull at its heart that had come down from the high meadows generations back.

The stranger asked for a bed and paid in silver that smelt of river water. That night he could not sleep, and he said the dreams kept pressing at the door, looking for him. Ysolde climbed the stairs with a candle and found him sitting up with his hands full of thread. 'The web catches what you don't want,' she said. 'Then the stag carries it down the mountain.'

He laughed, not unkindly, and asked what the stag did with the dreams once it had them. She did not know. Her grandmother had said the antlers were a doorway and the feathers were the wind that kept it open, and that a stag never forgot a face. In the morning the wind had dropped and the snow lay smooth to the tree line. The stranger was gone, and his silver had turned to dry leaves on the bench.

Ysolde went to the door and looked up. The net was whole, but one line had been drawn tight across its centre, as if something large had passed through and left its mark in the web. She reached up and touched the skull, and it was cold the way a sleeping animal is cold.
