Dreamcatcher with feathers and chains

Fine line · Colour · Flash

A dreamcatcher hangs from a circular hoop with a radial spiral web of fine lines and small beads. Three feathers and a short chain with a pendant hang from the lower edge, with several cords trailing to the right. The drawing uses dense cross-hatched pen linework in dark blue ink on a cream background, with the feathers shaded by hatching.

The nets had been hung to dry on the posts all week, and Mrs Ada Wrack would not let anyone touch the little hoop she kept above the bed in the back room. It was willow, bent twice and bound with waxed thread, and across its middle she had strung a web so fine the lamplight went through it in rings. Ellen, the lad who came up from the harbour each morning to help with the mending, asked her once what it was for. 'Catching,' said Ada, and went back to her knots.

Ellen thought she meant fish, until the winter the boy Tom came down with the fever and talked all night about a dog with three legs chasing him along the sea wall. Ada sat with him. In the grey hour before the bells she lifted the hoop from its nail, held it over the pillow, and began to pick at the threads with a crochet hook, one by one, while she murmured the names of every boat that had gone out and not come back. Ellen watched the web loosen and tighten like breathing.

By morning the fever had broke and the dog was gone. Ada hung the hoop back up, but the centre of the web was torn in a neat hole the size of a thumb. Ellen asked where the bad dreams had gone. Ada tapped the grey gull feather tied at the bottom and said the web only holds what it can bear to keep, and the rest slides through to the sea.

Tom grew up and went to sea on the Margaret. Ellen still has the hoop. Every spring she stitches the same thumb-sized gap back in, and every spring she leaves it open a little, so the weather has somewhere to go.
