Grey flower and leaves on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A layered flower with a white and grey centre, ringed by grey petals, sits above a cluster of dark grey leaves. The linework is bold and dark, with soft grey shading across the petals and leaves and small orange highlights on the petal edges. The tattoo is centred on the forearm against a blurred brown background.

The gardener at Harrowgate Keep had one rule for the spring frost, and it was to cover the grey roses before the bells rang nine. Nobody remembered who had planted them, only that they had come up through the flagstones of the old chapel the year the roof fell in, and that they never bloomed white like the others on the wall. They bloomed in layers, petal under petal, the centre pale as a tallow candle and ringed with a crimped white crown, as if someone had tried to hold a bit of winter in their hands.

In the year of the hard frost, a stonemason's boy called Tobin came up the hill with a cart of broken lintels and no coat. He found the gardener asleep against the well with her sleeve pushed up, and the grey leaves had crept out from under the cloth onto her wrist. She woke and told him the roses only opened for people who meant to stay, and he laughed at her, because he was going to the coast by Lady Day.
He went to the coast. He came back in autumn with a bag of silver and a fever that would not break, and he asked for the gardener at the gate. She took him to the chapel and showed him the bed of grey roses, every bloom closed tight against the cold. Tobin sat down among them without a word. By morning the petals had opened all round him, dark at the edges and touched with orange like the last light on a stone wall, and the gardener covered them with her own shawl and left him to it.
