Dreamcatcher with feathers on the forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey dreamcatcher sits on the inner forearm, with a circular hoop, a radiating web pattern and a small loop at the top. Three feathers hang from beaded strings below the hoop, shaded with fine hatching to show their texture. The tattoo is centred against a dark background, and the hand is visible at the top of the frame.

Ada Penhallow had strung her third hoop of the winter before the kettle boiled, the willow ring bent to a circle and bound with waxed line, the web worked outward from the centre in spokes that never quite met. Her brother Tom watched from the stool by the range, turning a gull feather between finger and thumb as though it might tell him something. "They'll not sell in Cromer," he said. "Nobody here buys a thing to keep bad sleep off."

"Mother did," Ada said, knotting a bead of blue glass to the third drop. She left a loop at the top so the hoop could hang from a nail above a bed. The boats had gone out before dawn and would come back on the tide, and the wives tied oil rags to the gate posts so the men could find their own doors in the fog.
The storm came in on the Thursday. Ada sat up with the lamp, feathers laid in a dish, and in the small hours she heard a bell clanging somewhere past the groyne. She took the nearest hoop and held it to the window. The web was thick with something grey and wriggling, like wet thread caught in sleep. She understood then that the web did not keep dreams out at all. It held them the way a net holds fish, and only the feathers were made to let go.
At first light she carried the hoop down to the shingle and unpicked the feathers one by one, letting the wind have them. Tom found her there with her hands raw from the cold. "Two skiffs have rounded the point," he said, pointing at the water, their sails the colour of tea. Ada tied the empty ring to the gate and went in to put the kettle on.
