A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Win had put her third arrow into the lock beam before breakfast, which meant the mooring below Stoke Hollow was hers by rights. Ada stood on the cabin roof with her hands tucked into her apron and watched the feathers shiver. Her father's barge, the Marigold, sat low under a shawl of mist, and somewhere in the reeds a moorhen was complaining about the racket.

Her father had a rule for these things. A shaft driven point up into the willow claimed the bank, and a shaft buried point down in the mud meant you had given up. Ada had buried hers at the lock gate in a temper, and she was not a woman who gave anything up without a fight. She climbed down, took the spare line and walked the towpath to where the mallow grew thick in the nettles, two clumps of it, five petals each, the centres dusted yellow as butter. She picked the best stems and carried them back wrapped in a wet rag.

Win was still on the roof when she returned, the bow across her knees. "You've come to lose, then," she said. Ada did not answer. She bound the mallow to the fletching of the fallen arrow, tied it tight with the line, and climbed up the lock beam to where the others stood in the willow. Then she pulled the bent shaft out of the mud and set it beside the others, point down, so the flowers hung above the water like a pair of lamps.

By noon the Marigold had clear mooring rings and a bruised pink bouquet nailed to the cabin wall, where the other bargemen's wives would see it and know the truce was signed. Win laughed until she had to sit down on the coal hatch, and Ada, who had won the argument after all, let her.
