Dreamcatcher with peace sign on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey dreamcatcher tattoo sits on the side of the ribcage, with a peace sign formed by the central woven hoop. Three shaded feathers hang from the lower edge, with fine web lines and small beads around the ring. The photograph is black and white, cropped to the torso with a dark top and jeans visible.

The third hoop has split again, and you are the only brother in the scriptorium who can splice willow without the bark cracking. Brother Ewan stands in the doorway with his hands buried in his sleeves, as though the rule of silence were a coat he could keep warm in. You do not look up. Silence is easier when the work has something to bite on, and this work bites.

The net came up the causeway three winters ago in a wet sack, carried by a fisherman who had been given it by his grandmother. He said it caught the bad dreams in its webbing and let the good ones drop through the middle. The abbot, who had not slept well since the dispute over the mill, hung it above the infirmary bed to see whether this was true.
When you finish the splice, Ewan asks whether the web is meant to keep things in or out. You tell him the abbot wants it to look like a peace sign, two lines crossing the ring to join the two houses that have not shared a bell rope since the mill. You fit the three feathers last, grey pigeon flights from the dovecote, each one shaded with soot so they darken toward the quill. They hang from the lower edge and sway whenever the door opens.
That night you carry the net down to the infirmary and hang it yourself. In the morning the dew has settled in the small glass beads along the ring, and Ewan is standing beneath it with his face turned up, saying nothing, which for once you understand completely.
