Alchemical circle design on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a large circular diagram with concentric rings, a central vertical column of spirals and small star-like marks, and triangular forms set within the circles. The linework is fine and dark, with light grey and soft pink-toned shading filling the areas between the lines. The design fills most of the upper thigh and is photographed straight on against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had got into the seed potatoes in the clamp, and Ada Pennock went down the cellar steps before light with a stub of chalk in her apron pocket, because her father had said the spring would be lost. Her grandmother had drawn rings on the cellar floor the winter the well went dry, and Ada had watched her do it without asking what they were for. Her grandmother had said only that a circle keeps a thing in, and that the stars were mostly for counting by.

She drew the outer ring first, then the rings inside it, the way she remembered, and at the centre she made a column of small spirals one above another, down to the flags. Between the rings she set little stars and three-cornered shapes, some pointing up and some pointing down, like neighbours who had fallen out over a boundary wall. She worked by the light of a tallow dip. Her breath showed, and the cold came up through her knees until she could not feel the chalk.

By morning the cellar had not warmed, but the potatoes had stopped going soft at the eyes. Her father came down with the lamp, looked at the floor for a long time, and did not ask her to rub it out. He only asked whether she had made the spirals the right way round, and she said she had not known there was a right way.

That spring the rows came up green and the cellar floor still bore the chalk, faint under the boot prints. Her father stepped around the circle every morning on his way to the stairs, and he never once stepped on the middle.
