Dreamcatcher with watercolour wash on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a flower of life motif at its centre and feathers hanging below, drawn in thin black linework. Soft pink, blue and purple watercolour washes sit behind the design, and the words dreams unwind, love's a state of mind are written in script across the top of the arm.

Sit down by the stove, child, and mind the cat, she's been at the herring since noon. You want the one about Morwen Tallis and the hoop she hung over her bed the winter the Gull Mary went missing past the breakwater. Everyone in Porthkennack knew that hoop. Willow bent round three times, tight as a barrel hoop, with sinew wound across it in spokes like a wheel, and a little ring at the heart with seven circles drawn one through another, the way the old sailmakers scratched them on their lockers to keep the storms off.

Feathers hung from it, gull feathers and one brown owl's, and every dawn she took them down and shook them out over the harbour wall. The neighbours thought she was daft. She said a dream was only a loose thread of wool, and wool wanted catching before it blew off the bank.
Tobias came up the slipway on the ninth morning, grey as a gutted pollock, saying the sea had kept him under the lee of the Carrack rocks and he'd dreamt of her every hour of it. She laughed and told him that was the net at work. The bad dreams had gone out through the wide holes in the willow, and the good ones had stuck fast in the middle, where the seven circles were. Dreams unwind, she said, and love's a state of mind, but you have to keep the centre tied.
That winter she hung a fresh feather at the bottom and tied the knot twice. The boats went out the week after and every one of them came home on the tide, and the hoop turned slowly on its cord above the bed. Mind the cat now, she's getting up to the fish.
