Infinity symbol with Mamma script and heart
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink infinity symbol with the word Mamma written in flowing script across its centre, and a small outlined heart on the right-hand loop. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The tattoo sits centrally on pale skin and fills most of the frame.

You are halfway up the scaffold when the wind drops and the lintel above the chapel door shows you what the weather has been hiding. Someone cut a loop into the stone, a figure of eight laid on its side, and inside its curve the letters have worn almost to nothing. Your chisel stops. Mr Ashdown, the foreman, shouts up that the mortar won't wait, but you are already rubbing the grit from the groove with your thumb.

The letters spell MAMMA in a hand that loops as if it were written in a hurry. The mason who cut it must have been young, because the heart pressed into the right-hand loop sits crooked, lopsided the way a child's drawing sits on a page. Fitzwarren Castle has stood ruined since the siege two hundred years ago, and the village tells the tale of the lady who waited on its walls for a husband who never came home from the sea. Nobody mentions that she had a son, or that he could not yet carve.
You copy the shape onto paper before the wall is rebuilt, tracing the loop in pencil with your tongue between your teeth. The heart is the hardest part to get right. When the lintel is set back that evening, you stand below it in the cold and read the ribbon from left to right, then right to left, the way it has been read for two centuries without anyone noticing it never ends. The boy was not careless. He wanted the word to keep going round.
