Black lettering tattoo reading Curiosity often leads to trouble along the side of a thigh, with a hand resting on the hip above it.

Quote on the thigh in black script

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a single line of black lettering reading "Curiosity often leads to trouble." It runs diagonally across the outer side of the upper thigh, just below a grey top. The letters are thin and even with a handwritten, slightly slanted feel, and the warm, vignetted photo shows the ink as dark grey-black against the skin.

The marquee smells of cut grass and warm sherry, and the vicar's notes have already slid off the lectern twice. You are supposed to be ferrying the ring cushion between the tent and the vestry, but an envelope taped beneath the registrar's table catches your eye. Its flap is sealed with a wax thumbprint, and across the front, in your grandmother's looping hand, it says 'Open on the tenth.'

You tell yourself you will only peek. Inside is a folded map of the churchyard, a pressed sweet pea, and a list of names with dates beside them, the earliest from 1962. Next to one name someone has written 'still waiting for an answer.' Your aunt Maureen appears at your elbow and asks what you are doing, and you say nothing useful, which is how the two of you end up in the vestry, reading the rest by the light of a dying phone.

The list turns out to be every couple who married in that parish and never told their families where they really spent the honeymoon, or who they had been writing to before the vows. Maureen laughs until she has to sit down on the organ bench. 'Your gran put that there so someone would finally ask,' she says, and tucks the sweet pea behind your ear.

The bride is calling for the ring. You walk back out with the cushion in one hand and the map in your pocket, and by the time the first hymn starts you have already decided which name you will ask about first.
