Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop shows a single line of small black script on the side of a hip and upper thigh, reading "Curiosity often leads to trouble." The strokes are thin and even, with the lettering set in a slanted, handwritten style. The warm, dim photograph shows a grey top and a hand resting on the hip, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mule would not go past the cairn, so Ysolde tied it to the rowan and climbed the last of the pass on foot, the bell of the lower village still ringing faintly in her ears. Her grandmother had forbidden the notch where the wind turned, because the far side belonged to the grey folk who kept the snow. Ysolde had never believed in grey folk. She believed in whatever lay over the rise.

Over the rise was a door set into the rock, no higher than her shoulder, painted with a red hand. It was not locked. Inside, a passage ran down into warm dark, and at its end a hall of lamps burned without oil. Tables held bowls of honey and a clock that ticked backwards. On a stand lay a book with ink still wet on its pages, and the first line bore her own name. The second line said she had opened the door.

She ran back up the passage faster than she had come, but the door had shrunk to the size of a letterbox. Her mule was gone from the rowan. In its place stood a thin man in a coat of sheepskin, who asked her politely whether she had come to see what the wind was for.

She stayed at the notch for seven winters, answering his questions and learning his trade of listening to the snow. In spring she was allowed down. Before she left, she carved a line into the cairn with a nail, each letter leaning as if in a hurry, and left the rest of the stone blank for whichever child climbed up next to read it and decide for themselves.
