Maud Ellery had the third feather in her teeth when the carrier's boy came up the lane, so she spoke around it. "Two minutes more, Eli. The wind keeps taking the thread."

He leaned on the stile and watched her work. Behind the cottage the beech wood ran down to the river, and the rooks were loud over it, the way they were every evening before the frost. Her grandmother had cut the first hoop from willow grown along the ditch, bent it into a ring and strung it with sinew, always leaving a gap at the centre the width of a sleeping face. "Nets for the bad dreams," she used to say, "and the good ones slip through the middle, where they belong."

Eli's mother had sent for one. The mill had shut in the summer, and since then she had sat up at the kitchen table until the lamp guttered, while the boy grew thin trying to keep quiet on the stairs. Maud took a handful of blue glass beads from the tin and threaded them on, then the three rook feathers, which the boy had gathered that morning from under the trees without being asked.

"Which way do they hang?" Eli asked.

"Point down," she said. "Let the heavy ones fall to the roots."

She tied the last bead at the bottom of the web, where it would sit closest to the ground, and pressed it into his palm. He looked at it a long while, then pocketed it and went off down the lane without looking back at the rooks.
